Most people do not realize that Jamaica has a national dish. That dish is Ackee and Saltfish. Ackee is a fruit that is boiled to help remove toxins that are present when the fruit is raw. Saltfish goes by many different names around the world, including baccalà, bacalao, bacalhau, and salt cod, is a white fish that has been dried out and salted. Typically this fish is cod, but it can be other fish, depending on what type of fish is currently available. The saltfish is heated up and mixed in with the ackee to create a hearty meal. This dish is a popular breakfast dish in Jamaica but can be consumed any time of the day.

Mannish Water

In Jamaica, very little goes to waste. Mannish water is a soup that takes the leftover parts of a goat that are not used in other dishes, such as curry goat, to create a soup. The other elements found in the soup often include root vegetables and any other vegetables that may be available depending on the time of year. Mannish water may be a soup designed to ensure nothing goes to waste, but the soup has become so popular that it is now a party staple in Jamaica.

Jamaican cuisine often features fish, shrimp, chicken, plantains, and of course, lots of delicious spices.
